The main reason it makes sense for Blender to have a version number indicating that something is a big development version, is so that the release can be targeted at features or bug fixes intended to be merged into the current version. If the version number has the word 3.2 in it, that means the developers are planning to focus on this particular version for a while. If there are significant new features in the software, it also means the version number should be bumped to 3.2.x to indicate the 2.9 series is being phased out for a few months.

Guys, I think this is a great idea, especially for our less active users. As a project leader I cannot force my project to be open source, otherwise it just wouldn’t be relevant. But since we have been so open in the past I wanted to keep that trend. I think it also creates more interest in the community, because there will be less confusion around 2.9x and 2.9y releases.
